Daniel Boone and the Opening of the American West

I love learning about our rich Kentucky history. One of my favorite local hikes, with a rich historic past, is Pilot Knob. This hike is located within the 742 acre Pilot Knob State Nature Preserve in Powell County. The trail is approximately 1.25 miles from the parking area to the top of the knob and is strenuous with a decent elevation gain.

As time allows, I will add a more detailed section under the Explore Kentucky tab about this beautiful preserve. This knob gave Daniel Boone one of his best vantage points to take in the beauty and splendor of what would later become known as The Inner Bluegrass.

There is a well done, informative and entertaining documentary entitled Daniel Boone and the Opening of the American West. If you are familiar with The Bluegrass, you will hear mentioned The Hickman Creek, The Kentucky River, Jessamine County, Pilot Knob, Blue Licks, Lexington, Richmond, Bryan Station, Harrodsburg, The Elkhorn Creek and more. You will also learn the fascinating story of Daniel Boone and his quest to open up the frontier of Kentucky, which was his life's mission.

This documentary has been featured on KET, our local PBS affiliate on a number of occasions. For more information on this documentary, you can click on the video trailer above or visit the KET website. You can also visit our BOOKS tab to order the documentary on DVD from Amazon.
